Once upon a time here in the back alley of 2703 Hanover Avenue, an artistic resident went to effort of painting vines crawling up a white picket fence. Only one portion of the fence remains, and we only noticed the remnants of the secret garden after we decided to claim a small garden plot just outside our fence. We wanted a spot for sunflowers and morning glories that would get decent sunlight now that most of the sunny spots within the confines of our fence have been claimed by vegetables. Last week we added some compost and soil and put the seeds in the ground. The first seedlings are already poking up out of the ground. If we can keep up this openly hostile and continuous occupation for 15 years, we can call the secret garden our own. Perhaps one day the 2703Hanover blog will elaborate on the distinctions between guerilla gardening and adverse possession gardening. For now, a pretty picture:

And the tomatoes continue to grow. Jed says the Brandywine variety he brought back from Maine might get as tall as 9 feet--which, if they continue to grow at this rate, I believe. And how awesome is that hanging tomato plant? (answer: really, really awesome)
